KATE: I hate gaining weight, I can feel my body expanding. I mean, I can actually feel it and it’s terrible.

KATE*: Why does that matter? You started expanding the moment you were born, before too. Everything about you is going to move outwards, like an explosion in slow motion, until it doesn’t anymore. Dying is a crunch; the same thing but working in towards the middle. Every person is a universe.

KATE: That’s pretty.

KATE*: It is?

(pause)

You’re pretty.

KATE: I am?

KATE*: Yes. I mean, I think you are. You look pretty to me, today.

KATE: What about tomorrow?

KATE*: Can I see you tomorrow?

KATE: Do you want to?

KATE*: Yeah. To see if I still think you’re pretty.

KATE: Does that matter?

KATE*: As much as anything else.

KATE: As much as smart and kind?

KATE*: Smart and kind usually last longer than pretty, but that’s it, and not always.

KATE: Most people prefer them.

KATE*: Do they?

KATE: Well they say so.

KATE*: They’re just things, like everything else.

KATE: The way you talk…

KATE*: The way you talk.

KATE: That’s different.
